Obituary for Thomas Jacklyn Smith

Thomas Jacklyn Smith, age 85, passed away Tuesday, March 6, from complications of pneumonia. He was born November 28, 1932 to Albena Elizabeth Graham Smith and Thomas Jefferson Smith. He graduated from Perry High School in 1950 where he excelled in his studies and athletics. He worked in accounting for Bibb Manufacturing until he went into the Army in August of 1953. Jack graduated from the University of Georgia in 1958 with a BBA in Accounting. He passed the CPA exam on the first attempt while he was still in college. As the top accounting student at the University, he was heavily recruited by many accounting firms and chose to work for Haskins and Sells in the tax department. In 1960, he left to form the accounting partnership Harris, Smith and Company, which later became Thomas J. Smith, P.C. He was known as one of the top CPAs in Atlanta servicing over 300 clients. He worked in his accounting practice until his death alongside his daughter, Terri.

He was married in 1959 to Mary Jim Bell and they had two daughters, Teresa Smith Durand and Terri Jo Smith Reeves. They share 5 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. He married Ann Clark Dailey in 2001. He has 1 step daughter, 2 step grandchildren and 5 step great grandchildren. Throughout his life, Jack has been hard-working, loving and generous. He has always put the needs of his family and friends before his own. His reputation for absolute honesty and integrity made his business successful and his clients consider him a trusted advisor and loyal friend. He shared his success with his church and those in need, often anonymously. His absence leaves a hole in our hearts but we rejoice that he is with his Savior in heaven.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Betty Lancaster and Iris East; and son-in-law, Jody Durand. He is survived by his wife, Ann Clark Smith; daughters, Teresa Durand and Terri Jo Reeves; son-in-law, Michael Reeves; grandchildren, Melissa Faulkner (Chris), Matthew Durand, Suzanna Durand, Mary Rose Reeves, and Holly Jo Reeves; great-grandchildren, Cason Faulkner and Carissa Faulkner; step-daughter, Carol Simmons (Clint); step-grandchildren, Renea Ducharme and Shawn Simmons; and five step-great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held Sunday, March 11, 2018 at 2:00 PM in the Chapel of Mowell Funeral Home, Fayetteville with Pastor Duncan Locke officiating. Burial will follow at Arlington Memorial Park, Sandy Springs. The family will receive friends from 5:00 - 8:00 PM on Saturday, March 10, 2018 at the funeral home.
