Obituary for Ralph Edwin Sheppard, III

Ralph Edwin Sheppard III, husband, father and grandfather, passed away in Peachtree City, Georgia on Wednesday, April 5, 2017 at the age of 69. The son of the late Ralph Edwin Sheppard, Jr and Margaret Copeland Sheppard, Ralph was born on August 20, 1947 in Atlanta, Georgia.

A lifelong hard worker, a trait which he passed along to his two children, Ralph began his own work life at the young age of 14. After attending Georgia State University, he began his distinguished career of law enforcement, serving five years with the Atlanta Police Department and 31 years with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, including the last 23 as DNR Academy Director at the Georgia Public Safety Training Center in Forsyth.

Ralph and Cynthia Kyle Davis met as young teenagers during the summer prior to 8th grade. The two began dating four years later in 1964, marrying in 1969, and have been by each other’s side ever since. The two joys of his life, son Jeff and daughter Jennifer, were born in 1974 and 1979, respectively. Ralph certainly enjoyed some of the simple aspects of life. Ralph was a lover of family, friends and certainly fishing. There was rarely ever a day where he couldn’t be found on a lake fishing or at least thinking about it. He loved to cook what he caught, which was a lot, served with a good helping of grits and the occasional beer. When asked by family or friends what ingredients he used in preparing his meals, the answer was never revealed to be more than an “old Indian recipe.” This included his infamous “Cooler Chicken” dish which has been imitated by others but never replicated. Often these dishes would be served on family vacations in the Florida panhandle, which were some of the most enjoyable moments of his life.

Ralph had the innate ability to make things seem easier or manageable, whether something needed to be fixed or someone needed a little guidance. He often parted words of wisdom, or quips, on to his friends and children, whether solicited or not. While most can’t be published, their advice were oftentimes impeccable. If words couldn’t provide a solution, he was also affectionately known to fix just about anything with a good roll of duct tape or a knot that could only inexplicably be untied by him or a very sharp pocket knife.

Ralph peacefully left his physical body for his eternal one at home, with his wife by his side. He is survived by his love, Kyle; his son, Jeff and daughter-in-law, Stacey, and grandchildren, Madison and Reed, of London, Kentucky; daughter, Jennifer and son-in-law, Ryan Little, and grandchildren, Luke and Emory of Fort Collins, Colorado; and his sister, Shery Kearney of Peachtree City.
