Obituary for Phoebe Marie Strahler

Phoebe Marie Strahler, who lived in Knox County from 1951 to 1980, died on Feburary 9, 2018 in Peachtree City, Ga.

Phoebe was born on March 6, 1925, in Malta, Ohio, to Dr. William Russell Sears and Flo Marie Dunnington Sears. She married Robert Francis Strahler on June 22, 1948, in Columbus, Ohio.

Though Phoebe and Robert attended the same small town high school, they didn't meet-and start dating until after World War II. They were both home "on leave" while he was recuperating from battle wounds and she from rheumatic fever, that forced her to drop out of college for a year.

After graduating from Ohio Wesleyan University, Phoebe taught music in Columbus, while her husband finished studies for a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree at Ohio State University. They moved to Abingdon, where they raised five children and Phoebe assisted in her husband's veterinary practice.

Persuaded to learn the strange game of golf, they enjoyed playing together and with friends at Lake Bracken and Soangetaha Country Clubs. Phoebe also played bridge and liked the occasional dry Martini. She was recruited by Fr. Joseph Hunt to play the organ and lead the choir at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. After living in Florida, where her husband continued to practice until he died in 2005, Phoebe relocated to suburban Atlanta to be near three of her children.

Surviving are two sons, Steven (Michelle Uhler) of Oak Park and Mark (Lana Benefield) of Peachtree City; three daughters, Susan (Robert) O'Brien of Lawrenceville, Ga., Kay (Dane) Patterson of Fayetteville, Ga., and Joan (David Stallman) of Leesburg, Va.; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, sister, Marthalyn Kistler, and a half-brother, Dustin.

Graveside services are pending at Arlington National Cemetery.
