Obituary for Monique "Moe" Julia Alston

Monique Julia Alston, also known as “Moe-Moe” was born on May 8, 1964 in Manhattan, NY to Patricia Pearl Mayers, where she grew up in a multi-generational home. Monique and big sister, Desiree’ developed a close bond early in life. Monique was a quiet, shy little girl and was given the nickname “Mousey”. Monique attended P.S. 1 where she was a good student who enjoyed “Double Dutch” and “Wally-Wally” with her friends, Tracy Stewart and Kimberly Dalmau.

June of 1976 meant big and wonderful changes for Patricia, Clarence, Dee-Dee, and Moe-Moe. It was then that they relocated to Central Islip, NY and added an addition member to their family. Pam Tyree was adopted into their family. A daughter was gained and two sisters became three. Monique started playing sports in the Central Islip School District and this was the start of her love of sports. Monique developed some strong friendships and started really coming into herself. Her quiet demeanor was still present, but her kindness, strong will, independence, and selflessness started to become apparent. She would not hesitate to help others or stand up for the underdog. Moe attended Morgan State where she pursued her interest in computers.

Monique worked at Citicorp as a payroll supervisor for many years. She loved her job until 2000 when a new love entered her life. Her daughter, Kayla was born March 2000 and being there for Kayla became Moe’s priority. In 2003, Monique decided to follow her big sister to Georgia giving her more opportunity to be available for Kayla. While in Georgia, Monique worked for Clayton County Schools during Kayla’s early years of school. Moe then started working as a TSA agent until challenges with ALS made it too difficult to work.

Moe’s kindness and loving spirit was ever present in her life. She may not have had much financially, but she frequently fed and opened her home to others who were in need. Family and friends were an important part of her life and meant a lot to her. If you were someone in Monique’s life, she would not hesitate to help you without batting an eye or asking any questions. She would frequently take on the role of nurse, housekeeper/sitter, shopper, babysitter, organizer, and backup for whatever may have been needed. She will be greatly missed by many.

Monique is survived by her daughter, Kayla; parents, Patricia and Clarence Mayers; sisters, Desiree’ Kelske and brother-in-law, Robert Kelske, Pamela Reid and brother-in-law, Craig Reed; brothers, Michael Mayers, Joey Tyree; Uncle Robert and Aunt Carolyn Carroll, Uncle Herman Mayers and Aunt Marilyn Moore, Uncle Curtis Moore; great-aunt, Mozella Cole; nephews, Dezi Ray, Robert Kelske, Bahbi Monik Kelske, Tyree Alexander Reid; nieces, Kyliasia Alexandra Reid, Jessi Reid; great nephew, Kye Alexander; cousins, Deborah Long, Jamel Carroll, Robin Mayers-Anselm, Richard Mayers, Cassandra Crawford; and a host of God children and friends.

Monique will be remembered for her kind heart, loving smile, and being a die-hard fan of the “New York Giants” as well as her loving devotion to her family and friends. She truly
