Obituary for Margaret Anne Hendricks

Miss Margaret Anne Hendricks, 84, passed away at Ashley Glenn Assisted Living in Peachtree City, Georgia in the evening of January 5, 2018. She preferred to be called, simply, “Meg.”

Meg Hendricks was born on December 12, 1933 to Dr. Herman Hendricks and Mrs. Helen Combs Hedger Hendricks in Nashville, Tennessee. She lived most of her childhood in her mother’s farm of Goose Creek Farm in Montgomery County, Kentucky; attended most of her education in Knoxville, Tennessee; and graduated in May, 1951 in Richmond, Kentucky, as valedictorian of her class – a few weeks after the death of her mother. That summer, she moved with her younger brother to Vienna, Austria, where her father was a diplomat under the Marshall Plan. She earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Vienna, her second undergraduate degree in English from the University of Tennessee, and earned her graduate degree from Yale Divinity. She worked as a therapist, social worker, and seminarian in New York City, where she resided for many decades. She also taught English and Psychology in universities all over the northeast and south when she was earning her degrees. Margaret Hendricks was of the United Methodist denomination.

Meg enjoyed traveling all over the world, from Europe to Asia to Latin and South America. She spoke three languages. She always felt one’s mind was more important than material possessions. Meg loved her Manhattan. She enjoyed playing the piano, going to art galleries and attending Broadway musicals, and reading everything and anything.

In 2001, Margaret Anne Hendricks was one of the mental health practitioners and clergy near Ground Zero, providing counseling to rescue parties searching for survivors. This experience led her into PTSD and later, mental health issues that plagued her for the rest of her life. She later developed dementia. Her niece brought her to Georgia in 1998 and realized Meg needed a place of extra special love and care. A chance encounter with a kind soul recommend Ashley Glenn – and Meg found her place. The family that Meg had at Ashley Glenn gave her ten years of love, support, and nurturing – and truly, the first home Meg ever had. The Browning, Hedger-Hendricks, and Childress family would like to thank Ashley Glenn of Peachtree City, GA for their care of Dr. Margaret “Meg” Hendricks.

Margaret Anne Hendricks was the daughter of the late Dr. Herman Emery Hendricks, of Fort Myers and Franklin, Kentucky; stepmother, the late Gladys Smelcer Hendricks of Mosheim, TN; the late Ms. Helen Combs Hedger Hendricks, of Richmond, Kentucky, the granddaughter of the late Sheriff Isaac Thornton Hedger and the late Mrs. Isabelle Combs Hedger, of Frenchburg, Kentucky, and the granddaughter of the late Mr. John Laban Hendricks and the late Mrs. Lura Atwood Hendricks, of Franklin, Kentucky. She survived her elder infant sister, the late Little Miss Erma Louise Hendricks, of Franklin, Kentucky and her infant great niece, Little Miss Lorelei Hendricks, of Griffin, GA.

Living relatives include her younger brother, Dr. John Thornton Hendricks, his wife, Mrs. Patsy Carman Hendricks. and her nephew, Mr. Robert Emery Hendricks of Griffin, Georgia; Mrs. Anne Elizabeth Hendricks Childress and Mr. David Childress of Bloomingdale, Georgia; her great nephew, Mr. Ian Robert Browning, of Barnesville, Georgia; and her remaining cousins, Mr. and Mrs. Donald and Commie Jo Hall, of Franklin, Kentucky and Mrs. Hazel Hendricks of Franklin, KY. Many cousins reside in Tennessee, Kentucky, Michigan, and Nevada.
