Obituary for John Nicholas Zipay

Mr. John Nicholas Zipay, 87, of Peachtree City, Georgia was gathered unto God for his eternal rest at 1:55 p.m. EDT on April 6, 2018.

John was born in Brooklyn, New York on September 10, 1930 to Anna Zipay (nee’ Vehec) and Michael Zipay. He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Michael, Paul, and Stephen (all of whom served in World War II). He is survived by his sister Anna Mae, wife Violet Ann Zipay (nee’ Sica), son John Joseph and numerous nieces and nephews.

John served his country honorably during the Korean Conflict in the United States Marine Corps, attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant.

After his discharge, John attended Pace College and commanded the Catholic War Veterans Post #1618 in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, New York. He rose to become the first Vice Commander of the Catholic War Veterans in the Borough of Brooklyn.
John’s tireless charity work included starring in plays such as Cinderella and Snow White, to raise money for The March of Dimes, driving the elderly to doctor’s appointments for Catholic Charities, and gathering tons of clothing for St. Joseph’s Indian School in South Dakota.

John met his beloved wife, Violet, at a “Suki Bean” dance on Thanksgiving Eve in 1961 and they were married on February 13th, 1965. His only son, John Joseph, was born on December 28th, 1965.

Throughout their 53-year marriage, John adored his wife and they shared many adventures together in New York City. They were regular Broadway theatregoers, dined at the finest restaurants, and danced as often as they could. They loved travelling to Washington D.C., Gettysburg, PA, going to Mets games, and visiting their son in Houston.

The couple moved to Peachtree City, GA from Maspeth, Queens, NY, in January, 2013, and were quickly embraced by the loving residents of Village Park. John genuinely enjoyed everyone that he met in his new homestead. His generosity, zest for life, faith, sense of humor, and kindness showed brightly to everyone around him. His years in Peachtree City were among the most wonderful times of his life.

“Every man’s life ends the same way. It is only the details of how he lived and how he died that distinguish one man from another.” – Ernest Hemingway.
