Obituary for John Lee Barnhill

John Lee Barnhill was born on March 4, 1945 in Jakin, Georgia to the late Bishop Barnhill Sr. and Rosa Lee (Perry) Barnhill. John was the youngest of the family, which included seven other siblings: Bishop Barnhill Jr. (Deceased), Catherine (Barnhill) Bell (Deceased), Rosa (Barnhill) Hinson (Deceased), Mary (Barnhill) Wilson, George Barnhill, Freddie Barnhill, and Laura (Barnhill) Duncan. He entered into eternal peace late Friday night, September 22, 2017 at his home in Fayetteville, Georgia at the age of 72.

He was educated in the Early County School System and graduated from Washington High School in 1963. Later that year, he relocated to Tampa, Florida and worked as a waiter for 15 years at Morrison’s Cafeteria. In May of 1978, he was hired by Delta Airlines as a skycap, and remained employed with them for nearly 30 years in three different cities: Tampa, Cincinnati, and Atlanta. After retiring from Delta in 2007, he took a position as a Skycap Supervisor with a Delta Contractor. He continued to work there until he was diagnosed with terminal cancer at the beginning of 2017.

John gave his life to Christ at an early age. He united in faith and fellowship with Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church, where he attended for several years, and sang with the Men’s Senior Choir. He joined in holy matrimony to Mary Lou Hawkins on September 12, 1966, in Tampa, Florida, and together they raised three boys and three girls - including a set of twins.

He leaves to cherish his memory: a loving, caring and devoted wife of 51 years, Mary Lou Barnhill; Five children; Christopher Barnhill (Brenda), Jonathan Barnhill (Christina), Carol Reeder, Clinton Barnhill (Sherry), and Angel Harmon (Michael); 9 grandchildren, Ameil Roberts, Jarrell Roberts, Ramiah Barnhill, Cameron Barnhill, Sarah Barnhill, Colin Barnhill, Zion Reeder, Garrett Harmon and Grant Harmon; son-in-law, Willie Roberts; and a host of many other dear relatives and friends.

A funeral service will be held at 3:00 PM on Saturday, September 30, 2017 at the Chapel of Mowell Funeral Home, with Pastor Randall Knighton officiating. The family will receive friends on Friday, September 29, 2017 from 5:00-8:00 PM at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to the GoFundMe Account in John Barnhill’s name, https://www.gofundme.com/john-barnhills-cancer-fight-fund.
