Obituary for Ida Louise Colburn

Ida Louise Colburn passed away peacefully surrounded by family at her home in Peachtree City, Georgia on June 28, 2017 at the age of 82, following a long battle with cancer.

Ida was born on May 25, 1935 in Hartford, NY to the late George Gibson and Hazel (Williamson) Gibson. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Minnie Woods. She grew up on the family farm until she graduated and started her career in key punch and computer data entry. Ida served honorably in the US Air Force during the Korean War, until she was discharged and started her family. The family moved several times during the early years but settled in Peachtree City in 1969. She worked at Playtex in Newnan, and NCR in Peachtree City, where she retired. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother.

Ida was an active participant in all her children and grandchildren’s sport and cultural events. She was involved from the start of youth baseball in Peachtree City with her two sons and continued that involvement throughout her life following each child and grandchild’s passions. Ida was a member of the original McIntosh Community Chorus and performed in music and dance. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Peachtree City and a current member of Evergreen Church, where she actively served in various areas of her church. She spent over 40 years as an active member of the Choir. As a breast cancer survivor, Ida supported the cancer survivor’s networks and carried the torch for Relay for Life at one point. She was greatly admired for her support of family, church, and friends, her willingness to volunteer whenever needed, and her generosity.

Ida is survived by her four children, Elaine Powers (Tim), Donna DeMarcus, Jim Colburn (Linda), and Tom Colburn (Harriett); her grandchildren, Cherri Powers, Michael Powers (Ginny), Michelle DeMarcus, Danielle Woodham (Chris), Brandi Hendricks (Josh), Julie Holloway (Tyler), Bobby Lee, and Trevor Colburn; and by her great grandchildren, Zoei, Vivian, and Gwendolyn. She is also survived by her brother, Ralph Gibson (Sylvia); several nieces and nephews, and by Don Colburn, the father of her children.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Breast Cancer Survivors Network in Peachtree City, http://www.thebreastcancersurvivorsnetwork.org, Fayette Samaritans, http://fayettesamaritans.org, or Midwest Food Bank in Peachtree City, https://peachtree.midwestfoodbank.org.
