Obituary for Dozier Power Smith, Sr.

Mr. Dozier P. Smith, Sr., age 92, of Atlanta, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, August 12, 2018.

Mr. Smith was born on July 12, 1926, in Hogansville, GA, the son of the late William D. and Lorena Power Smith. Following high school graduation, Dozier enlisted in the United States Navy where he served on the USS Thurston while in Okinawa. Dozier was a 1950 graduate of the University of Georgia where he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in business administration. Dozier spent 62 years devoted to his beloved wife, Helen Fetter Smith who preceded him in death on June 27, 2013 and was also preceded in death on December 20, 2012 by his son, Dozier Jr. Dozier and Helen raised three children, Lyn, Terri and Dozier, Jr. Dozier was an avid businessman where he spent over 50 years selling life insurance. He ran for public office and served as Atlanta City Councilman in District 12 during 1978-1994 encouraging the citizens of Atlanta to “Vote for HONESTY and EFFICIENCY in your city government”. Dozier and Helen were members of Sylvan Hills Baptist Church for over 50 years, then in 2012 moved their membership to Jefferson Avenue Baptist Church after the church closed. Dozier served on the deacon board as well as served as chairman of the deacons at both churches. Dozier and Helen enjoyed trips and cruises all over the world. While Helen was a Braves fan, Dozier remained a loyal and faithful Georgia Bulldog fan.

Survivors include his son, Lyn Smith of Gainesville, GA; his daughter and son-in-law, Terri and Bubba Newman of Fayetteville, GA; one granddaughter, Meredith Earnest and her husband, Chad and one great-granddaughter, Callie Marie Earnest, all of Fayetteville, GA; one brother, Joe Smith of Flagler Beach, FL; and one sister, Mary Travis of Tyrone, GA, along with several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Mr. Smith will be held on Wednesday, August 15, 2018 at 1:00 PM in the chapel of Mowell Funeral Home, Fayetteville, with Rev. Darwin Caldwell officiating. Interment will follow in the family lot of the Myrtle Hill Cemetery in Hogansville. The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 11:00 AM until the funeral hour at the funeral home.
