Obituary for Donald Wayne Johnson

Donald (Don) Wayne Johnson passed away on February 2, 2019 at the age of 69. He was born on February 2, 1950 in Memphis, Tennessee to the late Rev. Hugh Don Johnson and Oline Rowland Johnson. Don was a well-known attorney in private practice for over thirty years in the Atlanta Metro area.

Don grew up in Memphis as a pastor’s son. His father was also a professor, aspiring writer, traveled as a missionary in Brazil, and later owned bookstores and started his own printing business. Don’s father had a profound influence on his life and his mother Oline’s constant prayers and infallible love propelled him through many difficult years.

Don graduated from Lee University in Cleveland, Tennessee where he was class president, editor-in-chief of The Vindagua yearbook, and elected by the faculty to Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities. He went on to study law at The Woodrow Wilson College of Law in Atlanta while also working as a photographer for a local newspaper.

He established his private practice (The Johnson Law Firm LLC) first in Dalton, then Atlanta, and finally settled in Fayetteville, Georgia where he became a well-known member of the community. Don served on numerous political campaigns throughout his life and met his wife, Cindy Walker Johnson, during their work on one of those campaigns.

Don was Chairman of the Clayton County Republican Party and served as City Attorney for Forest Park. He was a board member for the Fortson Georgia 4-H Center and an active member of his church, Grace Evangelical, for many years. He started and organized their yearly Angel Tree Prison Fellowship Program, and also helped to establish a National Day of Prayer gathering for the City of Fayetteville.

A founding member of the Georgia Family Council, he was later recognized by the council with the “Power of One” Award for his commitment to making a difference in his community. Don was esteemed by many for his heart for serving others and loved by many for his quick wit, dry humor and the ever-present twinkle in his eye. He will be dearly missed.

Don is survived by his wife of 30 years, Cindy Walker Johnson; children, Trevor Johnson, Mallory Johnson and Scott Johnson; siblings Ron (Cindy) Johnson, April (Bobby) Fulgham and Carmen (Steve) Jordan; and beloved nieces and nephews, Steven Johnson, Andrew Johnson, Jennifer Johnson, Michelle Clopp, Erik Price, Ariel Holley, Stephanie Jordan and Daniel Jordan.

A funeral service will be held Friday, February 8, 2019 at 11:00 AM at Carl J. Mowell & Son Funeral Home, Fayetteville Chapel, with The Reverend Mike Stachura officiating. Burial will follow at Ringgold Baptist Church Cemetery, Griffin, GA. The family will receive friends beginning at 10:00 AM prior to the service at the funeral home.
