Obituary for Diane Marcelle Applequist Ward

Ward (Applequist), Diane Marcelle
Diane Marcelle Ward, age 86, passed away peacefully on
July 6, 2018.

As a lifelong daughter of the Roman Catholic Church, she lived an
Example of Christian virtue. It was through faith and love of her
Lord and Savior that she obtained the inner strength needed to
endure her cancer. During family prayer, a beautiful peace and smile
always shined in her. Diane had a strong devotion to the Blessed
Mother and throughout her illness many graces were dispensed not
only to her, but blessings were felt by her family tending to her and
to the wonderful nurses of Harbor Grace Hospice who she came to
love. Diane kept her faith private however, it was through her actions that Christ became a visible presence to others.

Born in Chicago, Illinois on August 21, 1931 to Harry Sigfried Applequist and Louise Bernice Lang, who immigrated from Sweden and Switzerland, respectively.

She grew up in Chicago, Illinois and was a devoted mother to her four children. Diane had a solid work ethic and as a mother she always provided for her children. Diane lived her life with charitable heart. She adhered to a strong moral compass in her life, by always doing the right by people. Recently Diane moved to Peachtree City, GA to be cared for by her daughter and granddaughter. Diane’s family received a blessing that some never receive and this was the gift of time. Time to let one another know how much we loved one another, time to laugh, time to share, time to pray with one another and time for her to visit with her sisters in Florida. Time, what a precious, precious gift. The family will be forever grateful for the moments that God gave them to spend with their mother/grandmother. Diane lived, she laughed, and she loved.

The following is a note from her granddaughter, Sarah Gottardi:
My grandmother was nothing short of caring, even given the circumstances she faced in her final months. When I would bring her things while helping my mother care for her, she constantly asked, “What can I do for you?”. That is the type of person my grandmother was and the person I will always remember. Her hilarity warmed my heart and seeing her smile was a blessing within itself. God has been given an angel and I know that wherever I or others in my family may be, she will always be watching over us, smiling.

Surviving her are her children, John Ries (Eileen), Jane Gottardi (Larry), Richard Ward; her sisters, Doretta Borsha and Doreen Merker; her grandchildren, David, Matthew, Andrew and Sarah Gottardi; Colleen Ries, Christine (Michael) Macella, Karen (Michael) Iwanski, John (Lauren) Ries; great grandchildren; Caitlin and Madelyn Macella, Caroline and Benjamin Iwanski; and many nieces and nephews.

Diane was predeceased by her parents, her siblings; Art Applequist, Lorraine Spicak and Dolores Kummer; and her daughter, Jennifer Ann Link (Ward).

Private Services will be held for the immediate family.
