Obituary for Carl Williams, Jr.

Carl Williams, Jr. was born to the late Carl and Naomi Williams on November 14, 1943 in Metropolitan Hospital in New York, NY. Carl grew up as the oldest of nine siblings on Avenue D in lower Manhattan. He graduated from Seward Park High School in 1961. Carl worked to put himself through school at Central State University in Wilberforce, Ohio. While at Central State, he pledged the Eta Gamma chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. in the fall of 1964. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in accounting in 1967 and later went on to earn a Masters of Business Administration degree from Pace University in New York in 1973.

Carl began his career at W. R. Grace and Company as a Financial Analyst and later joined AT&T where he rose to become the district manager in the Controller’s Department. He retired from AT&T in 1998.

Carl met his bride of 50 years, Gloria, in February, 1968 when they worked together at the Shell Oil Company. They married in May 1968. From this union a son, Carl Williams III, was born in 1973. Carl and his family resided in New York City and later moved to South Orange, New Jersey until their retirement in 1999. Carl and Gloria relocated to Fayetteville, Georgia where they have resided for the past 19 years.

Carl was also very active in the community. While in New Jersey, he served on the board on Victory Day Care, including a term as the President. He also was a member of the Black United Fund for many years helping to found the organization and serving as Treasurer.

Carl was known for his love of sports, especially basketball. He was also a terrific chef and took particular pride in his gumbo and barbecue ribs.

Carl capped off his career by teaching and co9ntributing to the development of young people at Kemp Primary School in Clayton County, Georgia. He was especially fond of his students that he called “his kids”. He was proud to serve the students with autism and he will be missed greatly.

Carl leaves to cherish his memory his beloved wife, Gloria; his loving son, Carl III (Aristea); his grandson, Carl IV; his brothers, Robert, Roger (deceased), Ronald (Allise), Ricky, Darrell (Martha); his sisters, Linette (Albert), Lynda (Raymond - deceased), Debra (Clairmont); and a sister-in-law, Elaine, as well as a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

His funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 28, 2018 at 1:00 PM in the Chapel of Mowell Funeral Home, Fayetteville, GA, with Rev. Barbara Evans officiating. Burial will follow at Camp Memorial Park, Fayetteville, GA. The family will receive friends on Friday evening, April 27, 2018 from 6:00-8:00 PM at the funeral home.
