Obituary for Carl "Bud" King Dowdey, II

Carl King Dowdey, II “Bud”, 75, passed away on September 19, 2017. He was born on January 25, 1942 in Harriman, TN to Ruby Fricks Dowdey and Carl King Dowdey. He grew up in Burlington, NC, and he graduated from Walter Williams High School in 1960. Following high school, Bud moved west to California, where he attended college at Santa Monica City College and UCLA, taking film courses to follow his interest in making movies.

On November 22, 1963, Bud received his draft notification and began his service in the United States Army, in the Military Police Corps, at Ft. Benning, GA, later achieving the rank of Specialist, or SP4, and receiving an Honorable Discharge. After leaving the military, Bud married Alice Kaye Dunaway on June 3, 1967. He then graduated from Elon College in 1968 with a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy.

Following graduation, Bud taught middle school in Stoneville, NC. He later obtained his commercial pilot’s license and began flying as a pilot for Madison Throwing Company. Bud later switched careers and started working for Roanoke Fashions, a division of Tultex Corp., in sales in the textile industry.

Always one to follow his dreams, Bud’s dream of making movies and his hobbies of photography, video, and film production led him to quit his job and start-up a cutting-edge video production company, AKD Video Productions, in 1981. AKD Video produced numerous local commercial videos and television shows, earning numerous regional awards. In 1993, Bud then started a transition to documentary film work and completed the documentary film “Expedition to Chochichiroe, The Search for the Cradle of Gold” in the highlands of Peru.

After moving to Wilmington, NC in 1995, Bud started Sheffield Communications and Sheffield Films. In 1997, he completed the documentary “In Search of the Perfect Cigar”, shot on location in Cuba. In 2008, Bud achieved his lifelong goal and produced “Death, Taxes, and Chocolate!”, a full length feature film that won five major awards at the New York International Independent Film and Video Festival (Best Supporting Actress – Catherine Trail, Best Feature Comedy, Best Original Screenplay, Best Original Score, and Best Ensemble) and earned him a nomination for Best Director. “Death, Taxes, and Chocolate!” was later exhibited in Cannes, France at the Festival du Film in 2008.

Bud later produced and directed Gracie’s Friends, which sought to find “forever homes” for homeless animals. Gracie’s Friends aired for two seasons in Wilmington, NC during 2011 and 2012. More recently, Bud continued to write screenplays for additional full-length feature films, and he worked up to his last days with two screen plays finished but not yet produced on film.
Bud lived his life fearlessly and boldly. He lived “larger than life” and never met a stranger. Facing the unknown, he jumped head-first and without fear into challenges that many avoid. He is loved and will be deeply missed by family and friends alike.

Bud is survived by his wife of 50 years, Kaye Dunaway Dowdey; his daughter, Shannon Dowdey (Chad) Conner; his son, Carl K. “Trey” (April) Dowdey, III of Hoover, AL; his grandchildren, Caroline and Barrett Conner, and Finn, Caelin, Bailee and Rohan Dowdey; his sister, Martha (Bill) Hooks of Wilsonville, AL; his sister-in-law, René (Lamar) Buchanan; and his nieces, Candice Reese and Leigh Price.

A memorial service for Bud will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, September 23, 2017 at Carl J. Mowell & Son Funeral Home, Fayetteville Chapel. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 1:00-2:00 PM prior to the service.
