Obituary for Allen Richard Barnes

Allen Richard Barnes was born on May 2, 1940 to Jesse Barnes and Grace Wigenton Barnes in Reading, Pennsylvania. He was the seventh of ten children born into that union.

After graduating from Reading Senior High School in 1958, Allen set off on a journey that would take him around the world. He earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in History from Lincoln University (Lincoln, PA), where he played football and became a member of the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity (Epsilon Chapter). In 1963, he enlisted in the United States Air Force, eventually rising to the rank of Captain. During his professional career, he worked in various capacities, military and/or civilian, in Vietnam, Denver, CO, Yokota AB, Japan, Tainan AB, Taiwan, Beale AFB, CA, England AFB, LA, Indian Head, MD, and Saudi Arabia. He ended his professional career in 2001 with the Department of Defense.

Allen was a devoted husband to his wife of 11 years, Semiola “Semi” Barnes, who preceded him in death. Together, they loved to study the Bible and served in the community. Besides Semi, Allen considered his only child, Dr. Angela Barnes Walker, M.D., one of the great loves of his life.

Allen was preceded in death by his wife, Semiola Harrison Jackson Barnes, step-daughter, Cheryl Jackson; sisters Agnes Perry, Rita Moore, Sara Barnes and Jessie Page; and brothers Carl Barnes, Jesse Barnes, Jr. and Alphonso Barnes.

Allen is survived by Angela, his son-in-law Carl, and granddaughters Alexis and Chloe; a sister Anna Barnes Rice (Phillip); brothers Colin Kelly Barnes, Curtis E. Barnes and Malcolm Barnes. He is also survived by his former wife (Angela’s mother), Beatrice Barnes, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.

The funeral service will be at 1:00 PM on Saturday, October 6, 2018 in the Chapel of Carl J. Mowell & Son Funeral Home, Fayetteville, GA, with Pastor Jerry Young officiating. Burial will follow the service at Westminster Memorial Gardens, Peachtree City, GA. The family will receive friends from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM prior to the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart Association in memory of Allen R. Barnes, www.heart.org.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to the loyal neighbors of the Macintosh Commons Neighborhood Association, Fayette County, GA Veterans of Foreign War Post 9949, and to Fayette Family Church.
